3 Ways to Update Your Space

With a lot more time at home these past four months, we have more need than ever to make our spaces feel intentional and our own. Here are a couple of ways I’ve spruced up our living room to make it an inspiring and meaningful space!

1. Bring in some greenery.

A plant or two can make a space feel alive! If you’re like me and don’t have the greenest thumb, just keep it simple.

I added two plants into our living space this summer. One is our “Grandma Dot” Peace Lily that has moved around the house a lot the past two years, but has finally found a home by the corner window in the living room. (I put it in a cute basket from Target to give it a little extra love!) The other is a little Brazilian Philodendron from one of my favorite local plant stores, The ZEN Succulent. The combination of these two plants is just enough greenery to enjoy a bit of nature from the comfort of our couch!

2. Add artwork.

This one probably doesn’t come as a surprise coming from an artist, but art can transform the mood of a space, giving it a totally different feel.

I like to mix some old pieces with some new work. Sometimes all an old painting or photograph needs is a different frame to make it feel like new!

I paired some of our wedding photos, and a painting Brantley and I got on a college spring break trip, with some new artwork from Michelle Boyd Studio and Kaitlyn Heriford.

I like collecting artwork on trips and from other artists I admire. I actually don’t keep much of my own artwork in our house, apart from in my studio space. I figure I see enough of my own work, and I like to support other creatives and makers when I can!

3. Mix in different textures.

Adding different textures to a room can make it feel more sophisticated and inspiring. I love a woven basket hanging on a wall or an afghan made by a loved one to add the finishing interior design touch!

Twenty Two West has some gorgeous loom blocks that add some fun visual interest and texture. I found one with a pop of yellow to sit on our modular shelf that hangs above the loveseat!

Pottery is great, too. One of my favorite additions to our living room is a vase with beautiful hand-drawn flowers from my friend Maryfrances Carter!

So have fun moving plants around, giving your old artwork a facelift with a new frame, and adding some unique and meaningful pieces to your space. Happy decorating!
