Staycation
Every commission experience is a little different — and my painting for the Johnsons is a perfect example of how the process is tailored to the project!
Carlough + Co. (an interior design studio in Montclair, NJ, and Alexandria, VA) sent the Johnsons my way after helping them design their den. They needed artwork to go above their couch, but had struggled to find the right piece.
The Johnsons and I hopped on a video call, so I could see their lovely space and go over what they had in-mind. They wanted to incorporate specific blues to match their upholstery, but their major issue was that everything they tried ended up being, too, dark once they got it in the space.
So we agreed the best way ensure their painting would work was for them to send me photos of the space. Then I put together a painted swatch card with two different color schemes for the painting that I mailed them so they could take a look at the paint colors in the room! Once they picked the perfect colors, I got started on their painting!
After I sent them photos of the finished piece, we decided to add the Spanish Moss at the top to give it the finishing touch!
They stopped by the studio on the way home from vacation to pick up their painting, and it was such a treat to meet them in-person! They had a lovely trip, but were excited to enjoy time at home, so I titled their painting “Staycation.” Now, they enjoy a peaceful marsh view every day in their home!
The Johnsons worked with their local framer to add a gold frame, tying it in perfectly with their beautifully designed space!
Here’s what the Johnson’s had to say about the process:
Q: Why did you decide to commission a painting?
A: As a result of Covid, many galleries closed. We found it very difficult to select something online.
Q: What was your favorite part of the commission process?
A: The interaction with the artist.
Q: Do you have any advice for someone considering booking a commission?
A: Choose Sarah Jane! You’ll be extremely happy.
