Plein Air Painting

I’ve been thinking about revisiting florals for probably a year now. If you’ve been around a while, you’ll remember my very first collection in 2018 was Fanciful Florals, inspired by my wedding bouquet!

I find painting landscapes very loose and freeing, and I hadn’t figured out how to bring that feeling into my floral paintings until now.

Everything in the universe flows. You can’t get hold of water by clutching it. Let your hand relax, though, and then you can experience it.
— Dr. Wayne W. Dyer

Painting en plein air feels much like the quote above, like you are experiencing nature. Nothing can replicate a Camellia in bloom, so instead I’m striving to capture the feeling of it in that moment.

A small collection of florals will be available in April through Liza Pruitt, as part of a group show, so stay tuned for more details.

In the meantime, I’ll be taking my portable easel to Airlie Gardens to paint — I’m a regular, now!
